In the aluminum alloy family one of the most popular twins are called anti-corrosion aluminum alloy. The twins names are aluminum magnesium alloy (AL-Mg alloy) and aluminum manganese. As we can see their names are similar, just like twin brothers. But its their anti-corrosion property that makes them really twins. Generally speaking, AL-Mg alloy is of higher strength and corrosion resistance. Toady we’ll begin with 5052 aluminum coil stock, a common member of AL-Mg alloy.
Regarded as the most promising alloy of the family, 5052 aluminum coil stock has the following characteristics. First, it has good corrosion resistance property, a common feature of the family. It can be anodized to improve the corrosion resistance of the material in corrosive environments. Second, it’s easy to form, stamp, weld and finish. Third, it’s of high fatigue strength. Fourth, it has favorable cold working property. Because its advantages above, this aluminum coil stock is used for products that require high strength in corrosive environments, including fuel tanks, truck and trailers side panels, small boat hulls, truck cabs, bumpers, storage tanks, pressure vessels etc.
Normally 5052 aluminum coil stock has three process properties. First, it has satisfying formability under heat state. It gives good cold pressing performance under O stage but worse performance under H32, H34 and worst under H36 and H38. Second, it’s of better welding property of air, electricity, spot and slit than brazing. Fourth, its cutting property is not so satisfying in O state yet better in cold hardening state. A qualified piece of 5052 aluminum coil stock should meet the following requirements. First, there are no cracks, corrosion spots or salt points on the surface. Second, peelings and bubbles, if exist on the surface, should be within the depth of 0.5mm and an area of 5%. Third, the surface should be bright without pressing marks.
